Beginning school is a major upheaval in children’s lives. At Bittern Primary School we offer a Transition program in the term before your child starts school. We work with the Bittern Pre School to establish two transition sessions where children from the pre school, accompanied by their teacher, walk to the school and have a visit in the Prep classrooms. Children who do not attend the local pre school can join in on the visits. Information about the transition program is available on enrolment.
Enrolment
Enrolments are taken in term 3 and term 4 each year with an Enrolment Week in July each year. Children must be 5 years of age by the 30th April in the year they start school. Proof of age and an Immunisation Certificate is required for enrolment in all Victorian Primary Schools.
Yard Duty
Children are supervised in the school yard at all times. Two teachers are on duty before school, during recess and lunch and after school. Duty teachers carry a folder to make them easy to identify.
School Times
School starts at 9 am every day. Try to arrive between 8.45 and 9.00. Recess is from 11.00 until 11.30. Play lunch and lunch are eaten in the classroom and then the children play in the yard from 1.05 until 2.00pm. For the month of February our Prep students are dismissed at the earlier time of 2.15. From March they stay for the full day until 3.30.
School Uniform
Our school uniform is compulsory. It is available from the uniform shop at the school or from the supplier Beleza, in Keys Street Frankston. Hats are compulsory in terms 1 and 4.
Preparing for School
Read to your child for 15 minutes a day. Get dads to take turns at this too! Make it fun.
Walk around the school on a weekend.
Talk about school in a relaxed, casual way.
Let children talk and talk and talk.
Let children use their lunch box, bag and drink bottle.
Let them wear their school uniform.
Encourage routines at home.
Buy books, balls, paper and pencils as presents.
